Pohnpei Lab Technicians Graduate from PPTC

“It was challenging, but rewarding.”

Last month, five students from Pohnpei, in the Federated States of Micronesia, graduated from a POLHN-sponsored program from the Pacific Paramedical Training Centre (PPTC). They all successfully received their Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science.

Students began the course in early 2015, and graduated in June this year. The newly qualified technicians said they found the program very challenging, but also very rewarding. They are now eligible to be licenced as laboratory technicians through the FSM licencing board.

The students attributed their success to being in a good study environment with high quality mentors. These mentors are a compulsory aspect of the PPTC program, and help students by explaining difficult concepts and signing off on their competencies.

The PPTC is based in New Zealand, and is a not-for-profit organisation based out of Wellington Hospital since 1980. POLHN partners with this organisation to offer full sponsorship for a part time Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science. This can be completed via distance learning.
