Learn the essentials to implement effective antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programmes in hospitals.

In this POLHN self-paced program, you will be taught what AMS is, why it's important, and how to develop appropriate implementation strategies.

This course begins with an explanation of what the antimicrobial resistance emergency is, and why an AMS action plan is necessary. Then, through a case study of various AMS programmes, students are taught how to implement these in hospitals.


What will you learn?

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Recognise the importance of antimicrobial resistance as an international health security issue;     
  • Recognise the need for local action through AMS in hospitals;
  • Understand the essential functions of antimicrobial stewardship;  
  • Describe the components of an AMS programme;
  • Identify options for implementation;
  • Understand the role of hospital administration in sponsoring and supporting the establishment of AMS programmes;
  • Use the toolkit to undertake an assessment of current hospital status; and
  • Develop an implementation strategy.
