Partner Institutions

In addition to self-paced courses developed by POLHN itself, you can also undertake e-learning though one of the partner institutions. POLHN has a number of partner institutions that it works with to deliver healthcare education across the Pacific.

All of these partner institutions offer self-paced e-learning courses that can be conducted for free online. See below for more information on each one.

 

Fiji National University

Fiji National University (FNU) offers graduate and postgraduate degrees in a variety of fields, including medicine, engineering, agriculture, business, and humanities. For furthering health skills and knowledge, the University’s College of Medicine offers a number of postgraduate degrees and diplomas. The College has two campuses in Suva, as well as one in Tamavua and one in Lautoka. For more information on FNU campuses, click here.

Each semester, POLHN sponsors approximately 100 staff from Pacific ministries of health to take instructor-led postgraduate courses at FNU. Postgraduate certificates, diplomas and masters programmes are all available. These can be completed without students leaving their communities.

These sponsored courses are available in a variety of fields, including public health, epidemiology and health service management.

Pacific Paramedical Training Centre

The Pacific Paramedical Training Centre (PPTC) is a not-for-profit organisation located at Wellington Hospital in New Zealand. Established it 1980, it aims to provide training and assistance in the medical laboratory sciences. This includes development assistance for clinics and laboratories across South East Asia and the Pacific.

POLHN works with PPTC to offer a two year, part-time Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science. This can be undertaken in full via distance learning. For more information on applying for this sponsorship, click here.

 

Penn Foster Dental School

Penn Foster Dental School is an American-based college. In association with the Pacific Basic Dental Association (PBDA), POLHN has partnered with Penn Foster Dental School to offer sponsorship of its Dental Assistant Career Diploma.

The Penn Foster Dental Assistant Career Diploma is delivered completely online via distance learning. POLHN sponsors tuition for dental assistants in the Pacific to undertake this course, and holds regular teleconferences to monitor their learning progress.

Lippincott

The Lippincott Nursing Center offers courses specifically for nurses. Through POLHN, Pacific nursing students can undertake free self-paced courses from Lippincott’s NursingCenter.com. Lippincott provides online clinical and professional information, access to peer-reviewed nursing journals, and daily news updates.

Over 90 POLHN-Lippincott self-paced courses are currently available in the following areas:

  • Advanced Practice Nursing;
  • Cancer;
  • Diabetes;
  • Emergency Care;
  • Gastrointestinal Disease;
  • Genitourinary Disease;
  • Infections;
  • Legal;
  • Neo-natal;
  • Obstetrics;
  • Quality; and
  • Reproductive Health.

Participants who successfully complete these courses will receive an accredited certificate from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

BMJ Learning

BMJ Learning offers quality continued medical education (CME) for health professionals. It offers a number of courses targeted at doctors, nurses, pharmacists and others. These use mainly video and text, and a certificate is offered at the end. Most modules take around an hour to complete, and many are free to access.

Global Health E-Learning Network

The Global Health E-Learning Network (GHEL) is run by USAID and offers free, self-paced online health courses. Courses take around one to two hours to complete, and tend to focus on public health. Courses are delivered using video and text, and can also be printed out.

To access GHEL courses and register for free, log onto the website. Please note that GHEL courses cannot be used for CME/CPD credit.

 

For sponsored courses, however, courses must be conducted through either Fiji National UniversityPenn Foster Dental School or the Pacific Paramedical Training Centre. For more information on this, see the page on applying for sponsorship.
